The Lamb Project - Custom Pet Area for a Dog and Tortoises

Designing specialized and custom spaces for our customers’ pets is our favorite! Recently, we were asked to design a special area for one dog and two tortoises. First, we met with our client to discuss the needs of both animals and their humans. Next, we visited the proposed outdoor space to determine the best location for a pet door. We then reviewed details such as fence height, color, design, and all access points. We also discussed pet safety, individual animal behaviors (including snake-proofing with hard-wire cloth), ground covering options such as turf, decomposed granite, and pavers to separate the different spaces, as well as any custom features the customer wanted, including a tortoise den.

After the initial meeting, we compiled all the details discussed and prepared an estimate for client approval. If the estimate does not meet the customer’s needs, we discuss possible changes such as size, materials, or other factors. In this case, the estimate was approved with no changes. Once the deposit was received, it guaranteed the job and covered the cost of materials. We then contacted the customer to schedule the installation for five days, marking the start of the project.

We chose to install a variety of terrains for the animals to explore, ensuring each space would be stimulating and user-friendly. Our top pick was a soft, grass-like turf that offers a cool, inviting surface, gentle on both paws and shells, while also adding a pop of color. To further define the spaces, we added decomposed gravel and pavers, bringing unique textures underfoot—from the crunch of gravel to the solid feel of stone. Knowing that tortoises love to burrow, we took our client's unfinished den project and redesigned it, finishing it with cinder blocks and flagstone. The cool granite provides a perfect burrowing reward on hot afternoons, accommodating their instincts. When we had leftover turf, we repurposed it to create a playful circle pathway connecting the dog door and tortoise den to the main turf area, thus offering a diverse sensory journey. We complemented this with pea gravel borders for contrasting texture. For security, we installed a five-foot-tall fence and extended the snake proofing a foot out and into the ground, preventing escape since tortoises are avid diggers. As a final touch, we personalized the environment with fun welcome and warning signs!
